6 Aug 26 Day #6 in Madagascar, Day #4 on the Africa Mercy Ships.
Today is my Friday! On arrival we were informed that tomorrow is a “ship holiday” so the OR is closed. I am on call tonight but will be free to explore locally Friday and Sunday (also on call Saturday). I’m going to try to get to a local church service on Sunday.
Our OR today was staffed with 4 Americans (surgeon, 2 nurses and myself), a surgeon from Ethiopia, a nurse from Nigeria and an anesthesia nurse from Australia. We took care of 3 patients today who had hernias. All went well.
Every week there are new crew coming and others going. We have 3 anesthesia crew leaving and 2 coming. Next week I will get to work in all 3 rooms. Monday I will be in general cases, Tuesday in plastic surgery for a big “free flap” case and Wednesday “MaxFax” (maxilla facial).
It’s been raining in the afternoons after work. I went up to deck 7 to see the outside world. It’s a bit dreary. Hopefully tomorrow I will get to see some sunshine.

Tomorrow’s post will be a mini ship tour.
