The first step is to have the desire. This has been a long process. I had hoped to do a mission early 2020 however circumstances did not allow and then COVID hit. Despite the desire, life happened and though I talked about doing it, never made it to step 2 until…….
In February 2025 I applied to Mercy Ships. I was looking for a mission that had shorter assignments as I still work full time. Doctors Without Borders requires longer commitments than I was able to give.
The application process is similar to applying for a regular job. I needed to show evidence of going to medical school, completing a residency, state licenses, DEA registration and my employment history. Then I needed letters of recommendation both professional and spiritual. Once accepted, I waited to find out when and where I would be serving.
Since our vacations are planned a year in advance, I gave time in 2026 so I would be able to schedule vacation around the mission. So, Africa Mercy August 2-16, were my assigned dates.
Next steps were to be cleared medically. Nothing crazy but they require a physical, list of meds, medical conditions and vaccination history. Once I cleared that hurdle, I needed to get a series of additional vaccines. I added hepatitis A, Typhoid and Yellow Fever to my existing list and acquired medication for malaria prevention.
Next step was to make travel plans. I will end up traveling over 24 hours on 3 flights to get to Madagascar. I will stay overnight and then take a quick flight to get to where the ship is docked. Then on August 15 I will do the reverse and arrive home on August 17.
I am so excited for this new experience and can’t wait to share my journey.
